Manufacturers ask this before almost every project: “We don’t have CAD files — can you still render our furniture?” The short answer is yes. CAD files are preferred, but they’re not required — a 3D model can be built from CAD files, product photos, sketches, or even just measurements.

CAD files: the fastest starting point

If a CAD file already exists, it saves modeling time — the proportions, joinery, and construction details are already defined, so the 3D artist is refining and preparing the model for rendering rather than reconstructing it from scratch. This is the fastest path from brief to finished render.

Product photos and sketches

Most manufacturers don’t have CAD files for every SKU, especially older or discontinued lines being brought back for a new catalog. Clear product photos from multiple angles, or even a hand sketch with dimensions, give a 3D artist enough to reconstruct an accurate model — it just means the modeling stage does more of the work that a CAD file would otherwise have already done.
