Table lamp · Shell panels in brass

A small table lamp built entirely out of panes. Pale shell is cut into squares and held in a soldered brass grid — a faceted drum for the base, a low cone for the shade, each with the same cames running through it. The panels are translucent rather than clear, so lit it does not glare: the grid stays visible and the light comes through the shell banded and uneven, the way the material actually is.

A shoot would have needed two sessions for the pair below, and the lamp would have moved between them. Here the light is a switch in the scene, so lit and unlit are the same camera to the pixel — which is the only reason they can cross-fade under a cursor instead of sitting in two separate boxes.

The close view is the same model again, moved nearer rather than photographed with a macro lens — which is why the banding in the shell is the same banding as in the turn above. Detail shots taken this way never contradict the main image, because there is nothing for them to contradict.
